Cuervos (Crows) Loosely documents the regions of Southern California near the US-Mexico border, meditating on my experience as a first-generation Mexican-American. Crows become a recurring motif, giving shape to thoughts on migration and the carrying of experiences and histories across geography. The installation experiments with bringing the landscape being photographed into the gallery space, featuring objects found in the desert surrounding the border and natural materials that mimic that environment. This attempt at “terraforming” a space in the gallery seeks to draw attention to the physicality and representational limitations of photographic reproduction.
